About Iokai Shiatsu
What is Iokai Shiatsu?
Iokai Shiatsu is a Japanese form of treatment developed by Shizuto Masunaga. Using pressure from my thumbs, hands and elbows, and gentle stretches, I work along the meridians, the energy pathways in your body. I work with both hands at once: one hand listens, the other moves. This helps your body find its balance again. More about Iokai Shiatsu →
What is the difference between shiatsu and massage?
In a classic massage you usually lie undressed and your muscles are massaged with oil. In shiatsu you stay clothed, I work without oil, and I focus not only on your muscles but on the energy in your whole body. A treatment is deeply relaxing and aimed at restoring balance.
Which complaints can shiatsu help with?
People come to me with, among other things, back, neck and shoulder complaints, stress and burnout, sleep problems, fatigue and menopausal complaints. You are also welcome if you have no specific complaint but don’t feel quite yourself, or if you want to stay healthy. Shiatsu complements regular healthcare and does not replace it.
Does shiatsu hurt?
No. The pressure is firm but pleasant, and I adjust it to what feels good for you. Sometimes a pressure point feels sensitive; that is often a spot where tension is held. Always let me know if something is too much.
When is shiatsu not suitable?
I don’t treat people with cancer or during cancer treatment. In case of fever, an acute inflammation or infection, a fresh injury or fracture, shortly after surgery, or with thrombosis, I don’t treat, or only by arrangement. If you have a serious or unexplained complaint, please see your GP first. In doubt? Feel free to get in touch.
Can I be treated when I’m pregnant?
Yes, from the second trimester (around week 13), by arrangement and with adapted techniques. Always let me know beforehand if you are pregnant.
I take medication or I’m being treated by a doctor. Can I still come?
Usually, yes. Mention it during the intake so I can take it into account. Never stop or change your medication or medical treatment yourself: shiatsu complements it.
Do you treat children?
Sometimes. I only treat children and young people under 16 with the consent of their parents or guardians. Please get in touch first so we can discuss what is possible.
Are sessions available in English?
Yes, all sessions are also available in English. Expats are very welcome.
The treatment
What happens at a first appointment?
Before your first appointment you fill in a short online questionnaire via mijndiad and sign the treatment agreement. We start with a thorough intake about your complaints, your health and your life. Then the treatment follows. We finish with a short review and, if useful, exercises to do at home. That is why the first session takes a little longer.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable, loose clothing, for example jogging trousers with a T-shirt or sweater, and socks. You stay fully clothed. Jeans or tight clothing are less practical. You don’t need to bring anything else.
Where do I lie during the treatment?
Usually on a futon on tatami mats on the floor. If lying on the floor is difficult for you, a treatment table is also possible.
How long does a treatment take?
A treatment takes 60 or 90 minutes, including a short review. The first session with intake takes a little longer.
How many treatments will I need?
That differs per person and per complaint. After the first treatment we discuss together what makes sense. Some people notice a difference after one session; for long-standing complaints a series is often more useful. For that there is the package of 5 treatments.
How will I feel after a treatment?
Usually relaxed and lighter. Sometimes you feel a little tired, or emotions or physical reactions temporarily come up. That is a sign that something is starting to move. Take some rest after the treatment and drink enough water.
Can I eat beforehand?
Preferably no heavy meal just before the treatment. A light meal about two hours before is fine.
Rates, reimbursement and appointments
How much does a treatment cost?
A 60-minute treatment costs €75, an extended 90-minute treatment €110 and the package of 5 treatments €350. All rates include VAT. Rates will increase in spring 2027. All rates →
Is shiatsu covered by my health insurance?
From spring 2027 you can claim (part of) your treatment from your supplementary Dutch health insurance. By then I will have completed my bachelor-level training of 240 ECTS and meet the insurers’ requirements. Until then, you pay yourself. How much you get back depends on your policy.
I’m on a tight budget. Can I still come?
Just let me know and we’ll look for a solution together. Tips I receive go into a fund for people who can’t afford a treatment.
How do I book an appointment?
Via mijndiad, via WhatsApp (+31 6 82 09 74 19) or by e-mail (info@shiatsuwithflow.nl). I usually reply within 24 hours.
How do I pay?
After the treatment you can pay in cash (exact amount, please), via a Tikkie payment request, or by bank transfer within 14 days. You always receive the invoice by e-mail; it contains all the details you need to claim from your insurer.
What if I can’t make it?
Please cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance. After that, I may charge for the reserved time.
Where is the practice and can I park?
My practice is in the Hofcamp building, Hofcampweg 71, 2241 KE Wassenaar, between The Hague and Leiden. You can park for free at the building.
Do you come to my home?
I give shiatsu at my practice. Chair massage is possible at your home, for example if you are less mobile, or for a birthday or girls’ night.
Privacy, quality and complaints
What happens to my personal data?
I only record the information needed for your treatment, in a secure file in mijndiad. I am bound by confidentiality and share nothing with others without your consent. You can always view your file. I don’t ask for your citizen service number (BSN). Read the privacy statement →
What if I’m not satisfied or have a complaint?
Please discuss it with me first; together we can usually work it out. If not, you can turn to an independent complaints officer of the SCAG, in line with the Dutch Healthcare Quality, Complaints and Disputes Act (Wkkgz). More about complaints and quality →
Are you a member of a professional association?
I am affiliated with the complaints and disputes scheme of the SCAG, a member of the Dutch Professional Association of Chair Massage Therapists (BvS) and insured for professional liability via Balens.
Chair massage
What is a chair massage?
You sit leaning forward on an ergonomic massage chair and receive a 20 or 30-minute massage of your neck, shoulders, back, arms and head. I work with floating pressure, mobilisation and acupressure from the Shiatsu tradition. More about chair massage →
Do I need to undress?
No. You stay fully clothed and no oil is used, so you can go straight back to work or on with your day.
How much does a chair massage cost?
At the practice, a 20-minute chair massage costs €30 and a 30-minute one €40. At your home it is €45 per 30-minute massage. For companies and events I make a tailor-made quote, with a discount for more than 9 massages per day by arrangement.
Who is a chair massage suitable for?
For almost everyone, even if you have never had a massage. I don’t massage people with cancer or during cancer treatment, or in case of fever, a fresh injury, shortly after surgery or with thrombosis. If you are pregnant, it is possible from the second trimester by arrangement.
What do you need on location?
A quiet spot with at least 2 by 2 metres of free space, preferably a separate room or a screened-off corner. I bring my own massage chair; no power socket is needed. A parking space nearby is helpful.
How many employees can you massage in one day?
About 15 per day, with 20 or 30 minutes per person. More is possible by arrangement. Together we look at what suits your team or event.
How do employees sign up?
Usually a contact person within the organisation makes a schedule or sign-up list. I am happy to help with the planning.
How often is chair massage useful?
It can be a one-off, for example at an event or as a thank-you for your team. On a regular basis, for example every week, fortnight or month, employees notice the most effect.
Can an employer offer chair massage tax-efficiently?
In the Netherlands, chair massage at work can often fall under the work-related costs scheme (werkkostenregeling) or a vitality policy. Ask your accountant what applies to your organisation.
Which area do you cover?
Mainly Wassenaar, The Hague, Leiden, Katwijk, Noordwijk, Voorschoten, Leidschendam-Voorburg and the Bulb Region. Further away is possible by arrangement, with travel and parking costs.
Can I book a chair massage for a party or birthday?
Yes. I come to your home with my massage chair: €45 per 30-minute massage, several people by arrangement. Within Wassenaar I charge no travel costs.
